This film, also starring Dean Martin, “Something’s Got To Give”, which was to be a remake of the Grant/Dunne film “My Popular Wife”, finally saw an audience as “Recede Over Darling” with James Garner and Doris Day.

If you are a Mammoth Fan of MM or are considering this as a gift for some who is, this state is definatly the blueprint to go. If you are like me, you know that eventually you will achieve out the money for all of them anyway!. Also I did not look “The Final Days” for sale separatly. This boxed residence is an absolute bargain!. All the films see improbable. All wonderfully restored. Each Disc has it’s bear bonus features, including comparisons of the restoration, and some theatrical trailers. There is a “Movietone Newsreel” relating to the cinemascope process on the documentary disc. The technical info here says that these discs are in 5.1, and although the sound on all the discs is sterling, they are not 5.1. Bus Finish, Millionaire and Display Business are all in 4.0, Seven Yr Itch is in 3.0, and Gentlemen in Stereo and fat frame.That is what they say on the box and that is exactly how my DVD player decoded them. As I said they sound improbable, but I belief I would mention that for those that it may develop a contrast to.

THE INVISIBLE MAN- Claude Rains is awesome as the man whose invisibility serum slowly rots his brain. Hunted by police, he sets out to cure himself and get revenge on the man who betrayed him. Excellent stuff! Check out the running pair of pants scene! THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS- has Vincent Price as a man on death row, framed for a murder he did not commit. He gets some help in the form of the invisibilty serum and simply walks out of prison! Can he prove his innocense and find the real killer before te serum drives him mad? Great sequel! THE INVISIBLE WOMAN- This one is strictly for laughs. A scientist (John Barrymore) invents an invisibility machine with his assistant (Margaret “Wicked Witch Of The West” Hamilton). A young woman volunteers to be turned invisible and the slapstick begins. A gang of thugs wants the machine for obvious criminal reasons. The gang even includes a stooge (Shemp Howard)! Worth a look. THE INVISIBLE AGENT- Jon Hall is the title character, dropped behind enemy lines during WW II. Can he foil the nefarious plans of the nazis? Sir Cedrick Hardwicke is head of the gestapo and Peter Lorre is an evil japanese spy. Not bad at all! INVISIBLE MAN’S REVENGE- Jon Hall is back as the invisible man. This time out, cheated and betrayed by old “friends”, he seeks vengeance at all cost. He encounters a scientist (John Carradine) who has been turning animals invisible with his secret serum, and you can guess the result! Very good! This collection is yet another goldmine from universal’s creaky vaults! Add it to your monster list…

Between directing the original “Frankenstein” in 1931 and his masterpiece “Bride of Frankenstein” in 1935, James Whale put out a little gem called “The Invisible Man” in 1933. In some ways I rate “The Invisible Man” above “Frankenstein.” For one thing “The Invisible Man” has a great musical score which heightens the drama in many scenes and helps to speed the pace of the film. The original “Frankenstein” had no musical score (strange one was never added for re-release as it would have improved an already great film tremendously) as musical scores weren’t commonplace until a few years later. I also think that Whale had developed greatly as a director between 1931 and 1933. “Frankenstein” has many scenes that seem to be stagey and lack the finesse of Whale’s later films.

In many ways “The Invisible Man” is Universal’s most horrific horror film of the 1930s. Dracula was a vampire who killed to sustain his own existence, Frankenstein’s Monster was a misunderstood and sympathetic creature who killed out of fear or anger, while The Invisible Man is a man driven mad by an illicit drug who kills out of shear pleasure. He commits mass murder during the film on a scale much greater than any other Universal picture. We also have to remember he is at his core a man not a monster.

Claude Rains gives a magnificent performance, in his US film debut, in the title role. Rains, who’s face was only seen on screen briefly at the end of the film, had a deep distinctive voice which was perfect for a role that was more about voice than body. This role was the start of a long and very successful film career for Rains who played costarring and supporting roles in classic films from the 1930s through the 1960s.

Also in the cast are Henry Travers, Gloria Stuart and Una O’Connor. Travers was a talented character actor who may be most recognized to film fans as Clarence the inept angel in the holiday classic “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Stuart, who as a starlet in the 30s appeared in dozens of films before retiring from the screen, had a career resurrection in recent years when she was cast as “old Rose” in the mega-hit “Titanic.” O’Connor, supplying comic relief as a busybody inn keeper’s wife, played numerous supporting roles in Hollywood’s golden age including a the role of Minnie in Whale’s “Bride of Frankenstein.”

Of course, by 21st century standards “The Invisible Man” is antiquated. The special effects, undoubtedly cutting edge for their time, are not very impressive in the age of computer technology. Having said that, I must admit this film is still entertaining and exciting to watch. The performances, especially Claude Rains, still hold up and the direction by Whale remains spot on. If you sit back and imagine yourself as a moviegoer in the 1930s, having never seen special effects like this before, it’s easy to see how stunning this film must have been to audiences more than 70 years ago.

The $20 price tag is well worth it just to own “The Invisible Man” but in this Legacy Collection you also receive ALL of the Universal “Invisible” films (minus “Abbot & Costello Meet The Invisible Man”). It could be argued that “The Invisible Man Returns” and “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” are the only true sequels as they follow the adventures of Jack Griffin’s (Claude Rains’ character in the original) brother. “… Returns” is distinguished by Vincent Price in the title role. These two films are pleasant B-movie efforts by Universal and part of the second horror cycle of the 1940s. “The Invisible Woman” is more comedy than horror and features John Barrymore in the twilight of his career. “The Invisible Agent” was a wartime adventure featuring Universal’s top action hero of the 40s, Jon Hall, using invisibility to fight Nazis.

Having added The Invisible Man, The Mummy and The Creature to its series of Legacy Collections, I sincerely hope Universal continues with the balance of its horror titles of the 30s and 40s. I hope to see a release of the films that teamed Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi (”The Black Cat,” “The Raven,” “The Invisible Ray,” and “Black Friday”), a release of the Inner Sanctum series starring Lon Chaney and a set with all the one-off horror films (”Murders in the Rue Morgue,” the 1943 “Phantom of the Opera,” “Man-Made Monster,” “The Mad Ghoul,” etc.) of Universal’s Golden Age.

I showed this movie to my high school history class and the students learned a lot. As a civics instructor, I think it is noble that someone from a “blue state” went out and talked to people all across America, the mainstream media never does that. I am happy to see that someone cares enough to open the dialogue. Do not let the partisan bloggers fool you, this Pelosi is a great journalist!

Flags a-wavin’, “homosexuals” and “n-words” a -flying, FEAR, tears and hatred without end, these are truely the people Neitzche would refer to as , in his frase, “the bungled and the botched”.

THe blizzard of flags, I wonder if Ms Pelosi the director was trying to convey the notion that excessive flag waving is endemic to facista and totalitarian societies, and this “red , white and blue which has shrinkwrapped these “right wing moonbat’s ” minds.

But note, not as well conveyed by the so-called USian “liberal media” , the flag is also used as a ceremonial death shroud for those US soldiers who have been killed in the two ill conceived “wars against terror”. (a tip of the cap to Tom Tomorrow for the apellation “moonbat”). We dont see this display of flag by those who these right wing nust jobs suport so ardently, do we?

Indignant “working folks” decry Barak Obama as an urban “elitista”, no mind John McCain is a scion of the ultra wealthy, Obama is an “arab”, a “socialista”, etc….when, in fact , Obama is quite a centerist democrat, as his cabinet appointment has since indicated.

NO room for fact with these crazyloucos, who many have professed to “move to a different country” if McPalin was not elected.

Bye bye, I say, although the countries they choose, SPAIN, the BAHAMAS, for example, do not seem likely to be the most comfortable for scared caucasian monoglots, but fantasy seems to fuel the day to day of these for whom to think must really hurt their “brains”.

And they look pretty much like everyone else, more/less.

A sad sad commentary on ignorance, fearmongering, hatred and intolerance , live and in NOT SO LIVING COLOR (strange, but almost all the “colorful” participants are NOT “people of color”.

If this was not that these crazyloucos are the 100% item, this would be a good comedy.

(Oh, and a lttle aside, The furor over Barak Hussein Obama’s NAME and his alleged origins as an “arab”, foreigner, terrorista, etc….Barak is a name common in ISRAEL, so it seems a bit silly to be so concernes about his “eevil MOOSLIM” middle and surnames. I wonder if these people who agreed to be interviewed feel any degree at all of embarassment in retrospect~~ I imagine there a certain element that is PROUD of their performance. I first saw Swamp Thing on HBO waaay back in the early eighties. As a young teen male with my nose constantly buried in comic books, I was certainly part of the target demographic for this low-budget Wes Craven adventure. Admittedly, I didn’t think too much of Wes’s efforts; It seemed pretty bland, not colorfully action-packed like the comic book, and silly all at the same time. However, it did have the not-inconsiderable presence of Ms. Barbeau(Mrs. Carpenter), whom I had seen the year before in Escape From New York and The Fog, when she had her image(and figure)indelibly burned into my long-term memory. In regards to this new DVD, I have to say that the 30 seconds of restored bathing sequence is a pleasant surprise, especially since it is mentioned nowhere on the case. It should also be noted that more nudity was re-inserted into the party sequence at Arcane’s mansion, and the DVD should have been re-rated from PG to UNRATED(at least PG-13, possibly R) to account for these changes. Additionally, the new widescreen (albeit non-anamorphic) transfer is the best this film’s ever looked, and I must say I have a new appreciation for it. What I remembered as being a bland film of murky and monochrome green and brown, now seems to be much more vibrant thanks to DVD. One last quibble…as a general rule, MGM needs to use the original press art for its movie releases. Although I can live with the cover for SW, I prefer the painting of Swampy carrying Cable in her white nightgown. At the very least, they could include the art in the “Collector’s Booklet”.

This DVD is sorely lacking in special features. All you get is the movie trailer, (which is unintentionally funny as the voice-over narrator intones “Adrienne Barbeau….an outrageous pair!” Well, she does look great in a tight sweater!) a language selection, a scene index, and a leaflet with some background material.

The movie, though, is great and in widescreen format. Wes Craven departs from his usual gore to make a comic book hero into a comic book movie, with lots of action and derring-do. There’s even a poignant love story. It’s a fast moving romp in the swamp.

Adrienne’s nude bathing scene has been restored in this DVD version. For some reason it was edited out of the U.S. theatrical release, although not the European version. But now the complete movie is available, and I recommend this DVD to all Adrienne Barbeau fans, all Wes Craven fans, and all comic book fans.

The unusual Image DVD version of AND THEN THERE WERE NONE is a huge improvement in video/audio quality over previous DVD releases by VCI in 1999 and Madacy in 2001. All three versions are currently available at Amazon, so be certain to check the technical info page for each disc to glance which company makes it.

The video transfer on the Image DVD, said to be made from “modern elements”, is powerful, noteworthy sharper and more detailed than that on the VCI and Madacy versions. It also shows a limited more describe on all four sides of the cloak. The report looks somewhat battered during the opening credits, but it looks tall the rest of the arrangement. There is a limited amount of graininess and other blemishes throughout, but it is not detrimental. I’m especially impressed with the scenes that occupy spot in the murky, in which some of the background details, such as engravings on the wall, the subtle lights and shadows, etc., can be seen with great greater clarity. The VCI disc, conversely, looks grand less titillating, and the Madacy disc even less so.

The monophonic audio tracks on the VCI and Madacy discs are louder but have more noise compared to that on the Image disc. The quandary of the dialogs not being synchronized properly on the VCI and Madacy discs has also been fixed on the Image disc.

The Image disc has one extra: the film’s British opening credit sequence, which uses the deplorably offensive title “Ten Itsy-bitsy N******” (which is also Agatha Christie’s current title for her whodunnit) . The sequence is preceded with an explanation of its exercise so the viewer has the historical context in mind. The VCI disc has a biography portion on the filmmakers and the 1946 comedy short TWIN HUSBANDS, starring Leon Errol. The Madacy disc has a 9-minute newsreel footage from 1945, a 12-minute blooper footage (of OTHER films), 3 screenshots of lobby cards, and a trivia request fragment. All three discs are region-free and without subtitles or closed captioning.

Agatha Christie’s 1930s recent AND THEN THERE WERE NONE told the narrative of ten unrelated people who are lured under various pretexts to an island resort; once assembled, they look they have been brought to the island by a mysterious homocidal maniac who accuses each of them of having escaped punishment for a past murder–and who then proceeds to occupy them off one by one as the ever dwindling party rushes to unmask the hidden killer in their midst. Nothing like the fresh had been seen before, and it was a well-liked sensation. So distinguished so that Christie herself adapted the current to the stage. In creating the script, Christie discovered that the novel’s uncompromising tone and gross conclusion did not translate well to the stage, and the final script was considerably lighter and had a considerably softer conclusion. When performed, the script was played as great for comedy as for suspense–and proved as approved as the modern. A film version became inevitable.

Countless novels, plays, and movies have borrowed the premise Christie presents in AND THEN THERE NONE, and there have been at least four film versions (most often known as TEN Exiguous INDIANS) of the modern work. All of these versions rely more upon the play script than the current, offering a mix of comedy and suspense, and by far and away the best of them is celebrated French director Rene Clair’s 1940s version. Brilliantly played by an ensemble cast of renowned character actors including Judith Anderson, Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Huston, C. Aubrey Smith, and Roland Young, Clair creates a stylish, somewhat surrealistic romp that satirizes British “stiff upper lip” sensibilities with florishes of dusky comedy while quietly building a sense of increasing unease. From a unique standpoint, the Clair version seems more laughable than suspensful; few will procure it in the least unnerving. This does not, however, change the fact that it is a mountainous amount of fun to sight. The film creates an air of stale mischief that is compulsively luscious, and even if a contemporary director decided to have another go at the material it seems unlikely that any cast to equal this could be assembled. If you’re prepared for a witty amusement, AND THEN THERE WERE NONE is recommended.

I don’t usually comment on the quality of DVDs unless there is a glaring issue–but since there are several DVD versions of this film, and some have been poorly reviewed, I will specify that I purchased the VCI edition. (The conceal of this particular edition is yellow with the faces of the characters appearing in a V-shaped “wedge.”) When the DVD began to play, the VCI logo was very distorted; when the DVD changed over to the menu, however, the relate became stable. When I ran the movie, I found the titles had a bit of a flicker, but this swiftly vanished; as for overall quality, the portray and sound quality are rather terrible as the movie begins but lickety-split corrects to an acceptable–although not excellent–level.

We have several brainy baby videos, but this one really seems to have gotten my twins’ attention. They are almost 2.5, one boy, one girl, and both savor this DVD. They call out for the “painting” DVD several times daily. The video opens some fairly sophisticated worlds for the kids, introducing them to the colors, different types of lines, and other media. Tasteful and clever animation, as well as other kid first-rate devices (they like those umbrellas) resonate nicely with our tiny ones. For example, when the video demonstrates how two paints mixed together obtain a novel color, my twins bellow out the name of the unusual color being formed.

This is an estimable product, salubrious for two year olds, that is effective and informative. Between this one and their “animals” DVD, we are elated with the efforts of this company.

I purchased this DVD for my 2.5yr feeble son to add to his Brainy Baby collection. He absolutely adores this video! It teaches Significant colors, secondary colors, how current colors are made (red + blue = purple) and grand more. It’s knowing and of course there’s soothing music played in the backround.
